SXM Food bank
Due to the COVID-19 crisis the situation on St. Maarten has gotten much more urgent. Since the island is mostly depending on tourism, a lot of people are out of work, without pay and have no prospect of the situation getting better in the near future.
At this moment we are collaborating with other organizations to work out a plan to feed all the people who are struggling. We share information, so all participating NGO's know who did or did not get any food support as yet. We are as transparant and open as we can, together striving towards feeding everyone who is in need of food.
The demand is high and we realize this situation will not be solved within a few months. Therefore the Freegan Food Foundation has started working towards a food bank. A more structured system where our first goal is to send out 200 food boxes every week.
The principles from the foundation will of course still be taken into account. Which means that the food boxes will consist of healthy food, with a lot of fresh produce. Although it seems like our only goal is to feed the people in need, it is equally as important to support them in a healthy way. Plant-based foods are more healthy than cheap processed long shelf live perishables. Compared to fresh produce, the shelf stable foods have higher quantities of sugar and salt. These also contain less dietary fiber and fewer vitamins. We want to keep our community happy and healthy, promote a healthy lifestyle and at the same time working towards a more sustainable way of living where we don't put so much pressure on our planet and its inhabitants.
At this moment we are sharing around 350 food boxes per month. As said, our goal is to raise that number to around 1000 food boxes per month.
You can help us in several ways:
1) Share this message through your social media channels;
2) Go to your kitchen, find non-perishables that are still perfect to eat, but they've been in your cupboard for-e-ver (and you know you will never eat them) and donate those to SXM Food Bank;
3) The next time you go shopping, buy something extra and bring it to SXM Food Bank;
4) Click the donate button at the top of this page and donate what you want to share with our community;
We are happy with anything you donate, sharing is caring!
SXM Food Bank will open its doors in June 2020, keep an eye open, we will make sure you will know where to go!
