Did you know that 30% of what you find in the supermarkets never reaches our households? That means that for every 3rd product you see on the shelves 1 gets thrown away! And where does it end up? Right, the landfill, or better: somewhere on this planet.
After hurricane Irma we saw an opportunity to start making use of what is discarded from supermarkets and wholesalers. So we started collecting what was considered waste and shared that with the people who were affected by the hurricane and were still in need of basic essentials.
Since July 2018 we share the leftovers with our community, so they too can prepare a healthy meal for their family and olive a more happy and sustainable life.
Whenever a supermarket or a wholesaler has waste, they contact us and we pick it up. At this moment we have 40 area volunteers who open up their yard or porch for us. After we have picked up the food waste we contact the area volunteer and bring it to them. The area volunteer is then responsible for the distribution of the goods. Every area has its own whatsapp group, so when something is distributed in their area, we send out a text that persons can come and pickup what is distributed.
On a weekly basis we pick up around 2000kg (4500pd) of food waste from 21 supermarkets and wholesalers all over St. Maarten. Even a company from St. Barths ships back their surplus (expenses paid!) so nothing goes to waste and our beneficiaries get the opportunity to eat exquisite food from the luxury island.
